Information For Vets
How does the service work?
Services provided through Care By Helana are dependent on a Care Treatment Plan prescribed and determined by the animal’s Veterinarian. This involves a detailed plan outlining the exact actions and treatments to be provided, as well as discussion between the client, Care By Helana and the animal’s Veterinarian. Templates of this plan are available by request, and can also be stored on the animal’s medical record.
What are the benefits?
- Personalised support for client’s and their animals, leading to improved owner compliance and understanding.
- Increased availability of in-practice consultations and appointments.
- Additional support and follow-up to clients, in their own home, without the restraints of a busy practice schedule.
- Improved relationships with clients and perception of services, provided through a referral to Care By Helana.
- Making veterinary care more accessible to clients who are unable to come into practice for regular treatment.
Blood Sampling – Once the clients have requested and arranged an appointment with Care By Helana, we will get in touch with you (their registered veterinary practice). It is up to the client’s Veterinarian to prescribe the blood sampling required for the necessary tests. These include routine profiles such as; Phenobarbital Monitoring Profile, Dynamic Bile Acid Test, Kidney or Liver Function Profiles, Fructosamine, Blood Glucose etc. The appropriate equipment (blood sampling tubes, snap tests etc.) can either be provided and collected from your practice prior to the appointment, or provided by Care By Helana. The sample will then be delivered to the practice.
Blood Pressure Measurements – Currently Care By Helana is only able to take oscillometric blood pressure readings as opposed to doppler measurements. Should Doppler measurement be required, please specifically state this in the prescribed treatment plan. Ideally, an arrangement to hire the use of a doppler device from a nearby practice will be made, but this may limit the availablility. Care By Helana will clearly make any limitations of this service transparent to the clients.
Medication Administration – This includes eye drops, ear drops, medicated washes/shampoos, topical creams and ointments, oral medications, rectal medications and injectable medications. This service can be particularly helpful for clients with dexterity issues, memory issues, needle phobias and more. Medications that clients frequently request help with include at-home Librela or Solensia injections, Insulin injections, eye drops, ear drops and even routine flea and working treatments. This service can often involve supporting the client in learning how to give these treatments themselves in the future, but can also be a regularly scheduled service.
Expression of Anal Glands – This service is only for client’s whose animal requires routine anal gland emptying, not for suspected anal gland impactions or infections. It is must be specifically authorised by the animal’s Veterinarian, including the frequency.
Nutrition and Feeding – This service can be for client’s whose animal is currently an outpatient at their registered veterinary practice, for animals with chronic or recurrent conditions such as pancreatitis, FLUTD, renal disease, mobility issues etc. or for owners who would like nutrition advice regarding their animal’s day-to-day feeding requirements for their age, activity, weight and more. If outlined in a Care Treatment Plan, syringe feeding and tube feeding can be provided.
Mobility Clinics – Clients can request these without input from their registered Veterinary Practice, however they are generally most impactful when they are utilised alongside a management plan created with their Veterinarian. This service is for cats and dogs, usually with an injury, illness or impairment that affects their ability to function as well as impacting on their quality of life.
Wound care – This can include post-operative checks, suture or staple removal and re-dressing or rebandaging of wounds. To provide this service, a Care Treatment Plan must be in place, and involves frequent communication between Care By Helana and the animal’s Veterinarian such as wound photos, action taken and advice given.
